The application's working life

Go-live is where the project ends and the application's working life begins.

After go-live

Go-Live Is a Milestone. Not the End of the Work.

An application continues to need attention after launch. Defects need investigation, software dependencies change, and business requirements evolve. Ongoing engineering support helps teams manage that work without treating every issue as a new project.

01

Defects and disruption

Applications can develop defects or encounter unexpected behavior. Issues need to be investigated, prioritized, and addressed through a controlled process.

02

Maintenance and change

Updates, patches, dependencies, and compatibility requirements need ongoing attention as the application and its operating environment change.

03

Continuous improvement

Small enhancements and ongoing refinements help applications continue to meet changing business needs.

i Larger features and major changes may require separate project scoping.

1 Coverage. Times are Eastern Time (ET). 24×7 support is not part of the standard plans. It is available on request at an additional cost, and the details are scoped with our delivery team.

2 Capacity. Monthly hours are the range each plan is designed for. You receive the hours you purchase.

3 Response and restoration are different targets. Response means the issue has been acknowledged and is under active investigation. Restoration means the service is operational again, possibly through a workaround. Full targets for P1–P4 are in service levels.

4 Scope. A filled marker means the full documented support scope. An open marker means a limited scope. Dedicated personnel are part of the Dedicated Application Team only; the other plans use shared teams.

5 Commercial terms. Pricing and contract terms are discussed once we understand your application. Optional add-ons are available with Priority Application Care and the Dedicated Application Team and are agreed separately.

Illustrative scenario. Client results are placeholders.

When four parties share one application, nobody owns the outcome.

A common pattern in business-critical applications, and the cost of having support, QA, hosting and development in separate hands.

The answer first

Maintenance is not a back-office cost.

Independent research puts the drag of unmanaged technical debt at a large share of IT spend. When support, QA, hosting and development sit with different parties, nobody owns the outcome and that drag compounds. Putting them under one accountable team, with control points and your approval before release, removes the hand-offs where time and context are lost.

What the published research says
21–40%

of IT spending is absorbed by technical debt, by Deloitte's estimate.

Deloitte, 2026 Global Technology Leadership Study. Read the analysis ↗
10–20%

of the technology budget meant for new products is diverted to resolving tech-debt issues, according to CIOs.

McKinsey, survey of 50 CIOs, 2020. Read the article ↗
60%

of the surveyed CIOs said their organization's tech debt had risen noticeably over three years.

Up to 50% more

engineer time on work that supports business goals at some companies that manage tech debt actively.

These figures describe technical debt in general. They are third-party research, not NCompas results, and the McKinsey survey covered financial-services and technology companies. We cite them because ongoing maintenance is where debt is either paid down or allowed to grow.

01Situation

A mid-sized business runs a customer-facing application. Changes sit with the original developer, testing with a second firm, hosting with a third, and user issues go to a general help desk.

02Complication

Orders start failing. The help desk logs a ticket and routes it to the developer. The developer points to hosting; hosting points back to the application. The QA firm is asked to reproduce the fault only after the argument has run its course. Nobody owns root cause.

03Impact

Restoration is only as fast as the slowest hand-off. The workaround ships without a full regression pass because QA was never in the loop. The same fault returns, and leadership has no single view of what happened or why.

What matters
Split across parties
One team
Ownership
✕Each party owns its slice. Nobody owns the outcome.
✓One team owns the request from submission to release.
Diagnosis
✕Time goes on establishing whose problem it is.
✓Triage and root-cause analysis happen in one place.
Release control
✕Fixes can reach production without a full validation pass.
✓QA, your staging review and your approval come before release.
Recurrence
✕Incidents are closed, not examined.
✓Root cause is a defined step before work is planned.
Visibility
✕Status sits in several inboxes and ticket systems.
✓One request trail and one reporting view.

Time to restore after a failed change
Best teams: under 1 hour. Weakest teams: 1 week to 1 month.
Target, not a measured result: restore within 1 business hour when a release causes a failure. Production incidents follow the restoration target of your care plan.
Change failure rate
Best teams: about 5%. Weakest teams: about 40%.
Target, not a measured result: about 5% of releases needing a hotfix or rollback.
Cost of one hour of downtime
Over $300,000 an hour (about $5,000 a minute) for more than 90% of mid-size and large enterprises, and $1 million to over $5 million for 41%. Up to $100,000 an hour for 57% of small businesses (20–100 employees).
Your cost, not ours to measure. Use the calculator below with your own hourly figure to see what faster restoration is worth.

In the DORA data, about one in five respondents (19%) reached the best group. DORA's own advice is to compare a service with its own history, so treat these as context, not as a promise of NCompas results. ITIC figures are self-reported survey averages.

Five questions to ask about your current support
1 Who owns a P1 incident from first report to closure?
2 How many separate parties touch a typical fix?
3 Does every release pass QA and your sign-off before it reaches production?
4 Can you tell whether the same fault is recurring, and why?
5 Is there one report of what was fixed, what is open and what comes next?

Two Ways to Work With NCompas.

Direct support for the applications your business runs, or engineering delivery behind a managed service provider's customers.

For Businesses

For CTOs, CIOs, engineering and IT leaders, product leaders, founders and operations leaders who own an application that needs dependable ongoing care.

02 We discuss which care plan fits and how critical the application is to your business.
03 Scope, service levels and the escalation path are agreed at onboarding.
04 Requests then follow the eight-step path to production.
Path 02 · Through a partner

For MSPs

FAQ

Questions Buyers Ask First.

Ongoing engineering for an application you already run: technical support and troubleshooting, bug fixing, small enhancements, patches and updates, compatibility support, monitoring and reporting, environment management, backups and recovery, change management, and user training. Foundation Care covers bug fixes and enhancements. The other three care plans cover the full documented scope.

Vendor-owned product administration or licensing (for example Salesforce or SAP), infrastructure outside the application layer, onsite travel, third-party licenses, and new features, major integrations or migrations. Larger work like this is scoped as a separate project.

Response means the issue has been acknowledged and is under active investigation. Restoration means the service is operational again, possibly through a workaround. Restoration is not a promise of a permanent fix.

Standard coverage is business days from 8 am to 3 pm Eastern Time. Priority Application Care includes weekends, and Priority Application Care and the Dedicated Application Team offer flexible scheduling until 3 pm Eastern Time. 24×7 support is not part of the standard plans. It is available on request at an additional cost, and the details are scoped with our delivery team.

Targets are measured in the business hours and business days of the agreed service schedule. The escalation path is agreed at onboarding.

Every request follows eight steps: submit, triage, analyze, plan, develop, quality check, client review in staging, and release. Where an SLA deviation is expected it is communicated and approved before work proceeds, and a change is released to production only after the client approves it.

The MSP keeps the customer relationship, the commercial relationship, account management, customer communication, service governance and customer reviews. NCompas provides engineering delivery, application support, development, QA, cloud and DevOps support, technical escalation and engineering reporting. Partner protection and commercial operating terms are set out in the partnership agreement.

Send an inquiry describing the application and the support you need. NCompas will discuss which care plan fits and agree scope and service levels at onboarding. MSPs can start with a portfolio discussion.
